Hi there /r/hvac! I'm hoping you can spare some time to help me out. The issue my husband and I are having with our AC has been happening irregularly and is pretty weird - at least, to me! I apologize in advance for the long post - We have some troubleshooting background, so I've tried to be very thorough in my description to hopefully narrow it down. My husband and I live in a single story detached house, about 1200sqft, east coast Virginia. We've been here since October 2016. Our heating and ... TLDR; was sold 2 stage HVAC system but contractor did not install an 8 conductor thermostat wire. Can 2 stages be run off of 4 conductors? HVAC system was about 25 years old so in February had a few local installers give me quotes. We selected our company based on recommendation from a friend plus price. Install day went totally fine in mid April. It was cold so they told us if the house wasn't cooling down well as it started to get hot they would come out and check the freon levels. Low and ...

Hello all! I've been trying to troubleshoot my Goodman GMSS92 furnace lately that gives heat intermittently. Basically, a thermostat calls for heat, the inducer starts, the plug glows, it lights for a second, the flame goes out and then the blower turns on. The best thing she does is to kneel on the wire, and, leaning forward, pick up with her teeth from between her knees, a handkerchief. Then she swings on the wire, balancing herself with one foot only. Altogether, she is the smartest wire-walker I've seen for many a day. I don't know if this is a single or double stage furnace, and I don't know if it's a single or multi-speed. I know for a fact it's not variable, it's too old. What I do know is it does have 2 motors - a combustion motor and the blower motor. The combustion motor is a PSC motor, so a single speed. However, the blower motor is stated to be a direct drive...

So today I cleaned my mom's furnace (Rheem Criterion II RGLH- 07EAUER) and checked out a bit of noise which I'm sure is the draft inducer motor bearings starting to go bad. I don't do this for a living so I was careful to label every wire I disconnected in order to slide out the main blower assembly for cleaning. That all went fine except the two quick connect crimp terminals on the limit switch were loose and somehow I knocked/pulled them off the switch when I was cleaning the burners and burn... I have an older furnace in a mobile home that's giving me a hell of a time. It doesn't have any paperwork and a wiring diagram is nowhere to be found on the unit itself. Just installed a Nest Gen 3, and it all seems to work great \*except\* for Stage 2. Whenever the heater is in Stage 2 it just blows air (no heat). Stage 1 heats just fine. But in Stage 2 it seems that the furnace never ignites. I have a few questions: * Do Stage 1 and Stage 2 heat have different gas supply requirements? I wonder if Stage 2 isn't getting enough gas? * Is there any way to disable Stage 2? I know Nest tries to guess when to run Stage 1 vs Stage 2, but it seems haphazard. Even...
The most common reason for limits to open is a plugged filter or a dirty blower wheel. On the left are some high temperature limits used in furnaces. Dec 09, 2014 · According to the wiring diagram it is a 2 wire hookup, red and white. However it looks like the previous owner added AC and added in a fan relay switch along with a 4 wire tstat. The AC was removed prior to us purchasing and we are just trying to get the heat working. The furnace fires, but the blower motor won’t come on in either auto or run.
Hi everyone, I just discovered this subreddit after trying to find research on replacing motor blower. I usually do my own work unless it is really really complicated. I've replaced the motor for my ac condenser so I figured I would do the same for the motor blower when it went out. So first I needed to know if the new motor is compatible with the second one and if so, how do I wire it since there are 6 wires on the new motor and 5 on the old one. I also attached a photo of the wires from the...
This is a brand new blower motor and capacitor for my Coleman Standard Blended Air 2 Furnace. I have cleaned the blower wheel as well. I have wired this thing up and everything except for the blower is working. The thermostat turns on the heat and the cooling, but the blower never comes on. It does make a sort of buzzing, or maybe humming sound. The wheel doesn't spin very easily but it does spin by hand. I have tested the capacitor and received the correct 7.5 microfarad reading. I checked all ...

White Wire for W Terminal. *You should be aware that this may have changed, especially if the person who wired the thermostat didn’t use conventional color coding.
Hi all, This week we tried to switch to AC on our central air since it’s been warm. I’m having an issue trouble shooting a problem that I’d love to have fixed before the HVAC guy comes and points out something stupid. When the thermostat is set to cool, fan in auto, the condenser kicks on and runs continuously as expected. The coolant return (?) lines are cold and slowly showing some ice forming on an uninsulated area, so that looks ok. The feed line isn’t as warm as I would have thought bu...
Went to a service call on the side on Saturday. The guy called some random people on Craigslist to fix his 1992 furnace, I get there and I see wires just hanging loose and safeties bypassed. On top of that, the asshole scratched the wiring diagram off, pieces of it were laying on the ground, the Craigslist guy said furnace is too old to fix and quoted him a new furnace (guy was trying to make a sale and left wires off, didnt even attempt to fix it). So I figured out the problem. The NO and NC bl...

I installed the Ecobee 3 Lite today and I cannot get it to run the fan with the AC consistently. AC unit outside starts and runs flawlessly, but the fan won’t turn on. Sometimes it will and then it’ll get the house to the desired temp, then next time it won’t turn the fan on. It’s very inconsistent and frustrating. I am using the PEK supplied with the thermostat and my wiring diagram matches the one in the instruction manual for the PEK exactly. I can provide images if necessary. My wires fro...

I have a goodman downflow furnace that I have had many problems with since I moved into my home in 2013. When my inspector was looking in my crawl space, he noted that there was an open duct that would need to be capped, otherwise I would be blowing heat directly into my crawl space. Which I did after I bought the house. http://imgur.com/a/r4XxK That first winter, the high limit switch went out and I replaced it. Since then, my furnace has not had any issues, or so I thought. Old English wir "metal drawn out into a fine thread," from Proto-Germanic *wira- (source also of Old Norse viravirka "filigree work," Swedish vira "to twist," Old High German wiara "fine gold work"), from PIE root *wei- "to turn, twist, plait." A wire as marking the finish line of a racecourse is attested from 1883; hence the figurative down to the wire. Wire-puller in the political sense is by 1842, American English, on the image of pulling the wires that work a puppet; the image itself in politics is older: The ministerial majority being thus reduced to five in a house of five hundred and eighty-three, Lord John Russell and Lord Melbourne respectively announce the breaking up of the administration, and the curtain falls on the first act of the political farce, to the infinite annoyance and surprise of the prime wire-puller in the puppet-show. Apparently I can break a furnace blower motor by putting gauges on the condenser. Customer requested a basic service. Arrive and he asks if I brought Freon, cause it needed some last year. (Here we go!) Ask the old fart to turn on the system, put gauge on, find low side well below freezing. Alright, let's do a leak check. Ask him to show me the furnace. Condenser is running, blower ain't. Sure enough, it was running before I got here and I somehow broke it from outside... Old man won't hear...
This started when my thermostat called for heat all I heard was a slight click from the control board. Blower motor would not start for the purge cycle. I pulled the unit and connected to power outside the RV. When I touched the thermostat wires together I simulated the same condition as in the RV. I checked for power to the motor and there was no power. Sail switch was checked, no debris and my meter indicated it was opening and closing easily. Assumed then the control board was bad and ordered...
